What I Want for Mother’s Day
I would love the Thomas Keller duet -The French Laundry Cookbook and Bouchon.
But I want to put the magnanimous giver on notice - be they husband, daughter or son - do not expect a lavish spread of vittles, because these books are not just cookbooks. They are art books, painted and performed by Maestro Keller.
Whereas a fine still life engages our eyes, head and heart, these books connect on all five senses. The recipes ignite the taste buds into song; and scents wafting off the photography torment our olfactory fibers. We hear the skillets croon and feel the foods fondle our tongue. All that from just consuming the books.
Whether you are fortunate to dine at any of the stellar Keller restaurants or at the home of any fine cook, reading the books will broaden your appreciation of the culinary arts. The incredible care and skill that caterers, chefs and home cooks can invest in your pleasure are elaborated here. Just perusing them enhances your dining.
Imagine the added thrill when you get in the kitchen. The award winning The French Laundry covers Keller’s enlightening take on ingredients and their assemblage, with clear guidance to make one-of-a-kind meals. Each recipe offers a new canvas and renewed inspiration.
While The French Laundry echoes an aria, Bouchon is more a choral refrain - copies of comfort food from Paris bistros that lean heavily on perfecting and repeating a repertoire of classic recipes, from onion soup to ice cream. For the food aficionado try The French Laundry‘s Citrus-Marinated Salmon with a Confit of Navel Oranges, Beluga Caviar, and Pea Shoot Coulis. And make Bouchon’s incomparable Tarte Tatin for dessert. For an encore, savor the namesake Bouchons au Chocolat - Chocolate Corks.
